1955 is not a rare year for Roosevelt dimes. 1955 Roosevelt dimes are 90% silver. In average condition their retail value is about 0.07 X the current price of silver; a metal dealer will pay less.

Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter next to the base of the torch. It may be blank or there may be a D or S. (The letters 'JS' next to Roosevelt's neck are the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 10/2013:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $1.78

Moderately worn - $1.90

Slightly worn - $1.96

Almost no wear - $2.30

Uncirculated - $3.45 to $1340.00 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Very worn - $1.78

Moderately worn - $1.90

Slightly worn - $1.96

Almost no wear - $2.30

Uncirculated - $3.45 to $71.25

"S" mint mark (San Francisco); last year of issue:

Very worn - $1.78

Moderately worn - $1.90

Slightly worn - $1.96

Almost no wear - $2.30

Uncirculated - $3.45 to $1340.00

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary due to market fluctuations. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

"Liberty dime"

ALL American dimes have the word LIBERTY on them so that's not a distinguishing feature. Dimes dated 1946 and later are normally called Roosevelt dimes because they show a picture of President Franklin Roosevelt.
