The best shotgun shell for shooting ducks is a 3 to 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge with number 2 shot.
I can say that the LeFever Nitro Special was made from 1921-1948.I do not know if the serial numbers by year of production are available in the public domain. You may have the Grade A field model due to the engraved ducks on the side. These were made from 1934-1942.Barrel length was available from 26in.-32in,of which your shotgun fits.
Most all the Ithaca Pump model 37 were Engraved with 3 ducks and on the other side Pointer Flushing out 2 pheasants. It a common engraving we all see on Ithaca but you have an 1937 model like I do ,I have one as well with a serial number 2493, believe me they are worth keeping because that was the 1st year Ithaca made the Model 37 they only produced 3,500 shotgun in 1937

100-400 or so A little off on the guesstimate there. The ducks unlimited shotgun Is an Ithaca Model 51 12 Gauge and it is worth considerably more than 100 to 400. The going rate for this shotgun is anywheres of 500 to 700 in decent shape and if it hasn't been fired worth considerably more.
