The coin needs to be seen for an accurate value. This issue is common with a average value of $1,400.00 to $1,500.00 for a circulated coin.
A Gold $5 coin from 1887 is called a "quarter eagle" ... According to the retail guide, the average value of this coin is around $300, depending, of course, on the current market value for spot gold.
If you have a Coronet Head Double Eagle $20 gold coin, its value in very fine conditon (VF20) is: $1200.

No. They are made of copper plated with nickel. They are not valuable unless they have the mintmark "S" or are uncirculated. If your coin is gold it is only gold plated and adds no extra value.
This coin's gold value is now higher than its collector value. If worn, it would sell for about $475. If in nearly new condition, about $550.
Assuming the coin is circulated and has no "S" mintmark, retail value is $490.00-$560.00 depending on the actual grade of the coin. 1899 Liberty Head Half Eagles are a high mintage, very common date gold coin. NOTE: If the coin has been used as a jewelry piece, or cleaned, value is for the gold content only.
