My guess is that you have coin slightly larger than a quarter, with a picture on the front of a woman carrying a baby. In that case, to explain things:
(a) it's not gold, it's brass
(b) it's called a Native American dollar, not a Liberty dollar; the woman shown is the famed guide Sacajawea
(c) the date is on the coin's edge
