there are (basically) two types of trapdoors. The rifle and the carbine. (There is also a cadet model) The rifle barrel is 32 5/8" long and the carbine barrel is 22" long.
Since you say 'short forearm' it would appear you have a carbine. Measure the barrel to be sure.
As to value, it would depend on overall condition, finish, serial number (when it was made)
bore and wood...................send me the full serial number and I will tell you when it was made.
My Springfield model 83 ( J Stevens) is stamped 22 Short, Long and Long Rifle on Barrel. If yours is as well, then yes, it would fire LR rounds.
Springfield is the manufacturer. A rifle is a long arm with a rifled barrel. A carbine is a short rifle, generally considered having a barrel length of 20 inches or less. All carbines are rifles but not all rifles are carbines.

The trapper model is a short barreled model 1894 rifle. The barrel length was originally 16 inches, but under recent laws the barrel length is 18.5 inches.
How short a barrel? Factory choke tubes?
The model number should be stamped into the barrel near the Winchester name. It will say "model" or "model of"
it was made between 1903 and 1907
It sounds like you have a model 1890 with a barrel from a model 1906, 61, or 62. The 1890s were chambered for 22 short, long, and long rifle, but if chambered for 22 short it could fire ONLY 22 short, etc. It can use all three lengths if the barrel is replaced with one from the newer models.
If that barrel is less than 16 inches long and you are in the US, you have an illegal firearm.
Caliber 22 Short, Long, Long Rifle.
Mine says. short-long & long rifle, right on the barrel.
If not marked on the barrel, have a gunsmith check it out.
