Several different varieties of half dimes were minted in 1840, so it would be worthwhile having your coin examined in person.
Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter. It may be blank or there may be an O or it may be blank.

In addition the "O" mint mark was made in 3 different sizes; the largest one is the most valuable. If you have an 1849 O-mint half dime an in-person inspection is mandatory.
