Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. There may be an O or it may be blank.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 04/2012:

"O" mint mark (New Orleans):

Very worn - $35

Moderately worn - $69

Slightly worn - $162

Almost no wear - $456

Uncirculated - $810 to $9,560

If there's no mint mark the coin should be evaluated by a coin expert. The more common variety was minted at Philadelphia; values are:

Very worn - $31

Moderately worn - $71

Slightly worn - $108

Almost no wear - $420

Uncirculated - $720 to $15,940

The second variety was minted at New Orleans but used the reverse die from an 1838 half dollar that didn't carry a mint mark. These coins can only be identified by differences in design.

Very worn condition - $161

Moderately worn - $360

Slightly worn - $480

Almost no wear - $1,704

Uncirculated - $3,780 to $24,050 depending on quality

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
