August 1, 2009 The California Gold Quarter Eagle, minted in 1848, can be distinguished from other 1848 quarter eagles by the letters "CAL" located on the reverse side of the coin just above the eagle. These letters were not a part of the dies used to strike the 1848 quarter eagles but were hand stamped on each coin while it was still in the die. There were 1,389 of these coins minted. The circulated and uncirculated values for this coin are shown in the chart below.
