Also the Philadelphia mintages were struck in 2 varities; Medium Date and Large Date. To determine which coin you have it will be necessary to locate the mint mark which is located on the reverse [tails] side of the coin just below the word "DIME". A letter "O" is for New Orleans and if there is no letter the coin was minted at Philadelphia. To determine Medium Date from Large Date you may take the coin to a dealer and have it examined. That's off by about 65 years. Mercury dimes were minted from 1916 to 1945. A dime from 1853 would be called a Liberty dime or Liberty Seated dime.

Check that coin again. The Barber dime was introduced in 1892. In 1881, the design in use was the Seated Liberty.
