August 10, 2009 The 1848 Seated Liberty Dime was minted at 2 US mints: Philadelphia which is shown as 1848-P in this list and New Orleans which is shown as 1848-O in this list. Also the Philadelphia mintages were struck in 2 varities; Medium Date and Large Date. To determine which coin you have it will be necessary to locate the mint mark which is located on the reverse [tails] side of the coin just below the word "DIME". A letter "O" is for New Orleans and if there is no letter the coin was minted at Philadelphia. To determine Medium Date from Large Date you may take the coin to a dealer and have it examined.
