Trade dollars were special coins minted for use in international trade. They were slightly heavier than standard silver dollars.
Look on the back to see if your coin has a CC mint mark above the DO in DOLLAR. Also check to see if the word COPY appears anywhere on the coin because there are many replicas.

If you have a 'Trade Dollar' dated 1799 it's fake. 1873 is the first year of issue.

No genuine Trade Dollars are dated 1872. 1873 was the first year issue. The entire series of Trade Dollars is known to have counterfeits.

The first year Trade Dollars were issued was 1873. Many wrong-date counterfeits exist. If it does have "TRADE DOLLAR" on the reverse. It is definitely a fake. If not, it's a 1872 Seated Liberty dollar that needs to be seen for an accurate value. Take it to a coin dealer.
July 2, 2009 There were no US Trade Dollars minted in 1796. They were made from 1873 to 1885. However, if you meant a 1796 silver dollar, only 72,920 were made and I see them being priced from about $3500 to $6000 depending on their condition.
No US silver dollars were minted for circulation from 1804 to 1835 inclusive, and Trade dollars were only minted from 1873 to 1885. If your coin says ONE DOLLAR and is dated 1805 it's either a fantasy coin, a bullion "round" or one of the many fakes...
