1896 is a moderately scarce date for Barber halves. Look on the back to see if there's a mint mark under the eagle. Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 02/2010:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $23

Moderately worn - $88

Slightly worn - $150

Almost no wear - $388

Uncirculated - $570 to $25,350 depending on quality

"O" mint mark (New Orleans):

Very worn condition - $42

Moderately worn - $180

Slightly worn - $330

Almost no wear - $946

Uncirculated - $1,710 to $61,750

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn condition - $90

Moderately worn - $240

Slightly worn - $330

Almost no wear - $932

Uncirculated - $1,650 to $26,330
