Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. It may be blank or there may be an O or S.

Of course a scrap dealer would pay wholesale prices, and IMO the idea of melting these coins is ill-advised because it is destroying a historical item for short term profit.
DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
A $5 gold coin that was minted in 1899 - aka - Coronet Head Half Eagle - is worth in fine condition (F12): $250; its value increases to $400 if it is in a mint state of MS60.
With no mint mark or an "S", about $1000. That could go up to $1500 with a CC mint mark.
Assuming the coin is circulated and has no "S" mintmark, retail value is $490.00-$560.00 depending on the actual grade of the coin. 1899 Liberty Head Half Eagles are a high mintage, very common date gold coin. NOTE: If the coin has been used as a jewelry piece, or cleaned, value is for the gold content only.

It's NOT gold and just a dollar. The last year the US made a one dollar gold coin was 1889.
