To correctly appraise the firearm a dealer in militaria would need to know at the very least the manufacturer of the weapon. Serial numbers are usually on the receiver of the weapon and not on the butt so the 0896 XZ is at best obscure. Common rifles of the Spanish American War would include the 30-40 krag and the early model Mauser, both bolt action repeating rifles. Some US volunteer regiments in that conflict carried the single shot "trapdoor" springfield 73 carbine. A smattering of lever action weapons were also used. If one does not know the manufaturer then a physical description of the arm would be helpful to a knowledgable appraiser.
