It gives you a background that is used in art, history, and in general. There are many references in daily life that go back to the classics, but if you don't know them they go right over your head. Current writers also use references in their work and it doesn't hurt to know something more. They improve reading skills. The writing is sometimes not the best and may be difficult to wade through, but the stories are timeless and give the reader much to think about, which is why they are regarded as Classics.
