Cuba's love affair with ballet began in 1841 when the European Classical Ballet performed at Havana's Tacon Theater. In 1948 Cuba's Prima Ballerina Alicia Alonso started her own company and in 1950 added her school of dance to it. After the revolution in 1959 her company was renamed the National Ballet of Cuba. Cuba has produced many talented ballet dancers but most have defected to other countries.
