Viscosity is defined as the resistance to flow. It's easier to describe as thickness although that is not entirely accurate. For instance, a 5W30 engine oil is a 5 weight oil at 32 degrees F and a 30 weight oil at 212 degrees F (freezing and boiling temps), yet when a 5W30 oil is poured out of the bottle at 20 degrees it seems much thicker. It still takes the same amount of pressure to force the oil through an orifice.
