Voltage Outputs of Lead-Acid Batteries

There are many different sizes of Lead-Acid batteries and the voltage output can vary.

For example:

  • Some security/alarm systems use Lead-Acid backup batteries which are either 6 Volts or 12 Volts.
  • Similarly, emergency lights [like over doorways and hallways in commercial buildings, hospitals, etc.] use Lead-Acid backup batteries for powering the lights during power outages, and these can use either 6 or 12 Volt batteries.
  • Most automobile batteries are 12 Volts.
  • Some heavy vehicles [large trucks, heavy construction equipment vehicles, etc.] have 24 Volt batteries.
  • Various aircraft use different voltage output batteries.

The output voltage is dependent on the number of "cells" in the battery. A fully charged Lead-Acid cell has an output of 2 Volts DC [Direct Current].

Therefore, if a battery has two cells, then the output voltage would be 4 Volts DC. If it has 3 cells, then the output voltage would be 6 Volts DC, and a battery with 6 cells would have an output of 12 Volts DC. And 24 Volt batteries have 12 cells.

That is the basics. Now, there is an exception.

IF the battery is "overcharged," then it can accumulate what is called a "surface charge" which goes slightly above the 12 Volt nominal output, and usually is about 1 extra volt, and that surface charge will "wither" away within a few minutes to an hour, even without using the battery. If the battery is used, then the surface charge is drained off immediately.

Can use 14.4 volt charger to charge 18 volt battery?

Charger Output Voltage versus Battery VoltageNO, the output voltage of a charger must be greater than the rated voltage of the battery, usually at least one and a half to two volts difference.

Why would your battery light stay on after you have put in a new battery and alternator?

The battery light comes on when the alternator output voltage is too low or too high. You have a wiring or regulator problem. The battery light comes on when the alternator output voltage is too low or too high. You have a wiring or regulator problem.

What does 12 volt mean in the context of a battery?

It means the voltage output of the battery is 12 volts DC.

What is the voltage output on a 2000 ford windstar?

Normal voltage, checking at the battery or alternator should be in the 14 range.

How much voltage of output usually a battery charger prouduce?

A: that is no standard or establish output from each charger. However the charger must provide the maximum current necessary to charge the battery and the voltage must always be more then the battery when has reached full charge

What is a reversing relay?

A reverse current relay prevents a generator from discharging the battery when generator output is less than battery voltage. When generator output is greater than battery voltage, the reverse current relay closes and connects generator to electrical bus.

Your volt meter reads 16 volts at the battery at idle The alternator and voltage regulator have been replaced Do you have a problem?

Alternator Output Voltage RangeGenerally, alternator output voltage is consider OK if it is in the range between 12 1/2 volts to a maximum of 16 volts. Therefore, although the output is at the maximum, you do not seem to have a problem.Usually, if the battery has had a lot of drain, then the alternator output will run at the maximum until the battery is fully charged.

Does a weak battery voltage affect the voltage output of the ignition coil?

Ignition Coil Output Voltage versus a Weak BatteryYes, an ignition coil is nothing more than a dedicated, specialized transformer. As such, the lower the voltage in the primary winding, then the lower the voltage induced in the secondary [output] winding.

Can a 12v solar panel charge a 12v battery?

If the 12 volt solar panel output voltage is always higher than the 6.5 watt battery voltage. To charge a battery, a voltage greater than the battery must be applied to the battery, otherwise the battery will try to charge the charger.
