The Upper West Side, however, is a close second. This was not true until around 10 to 15 years ago. My parents moved to the Upper West Side when they first got married -- the late 1970s -- and it was not a wealthy neighborhood then. In fact, it was a dangerous neighborhood. When my mother was pregnant with me (in the early 1980s), she did not feel safe leaving the house at night by herself. The entire neighborhood was mostly vacant lots and crackhouses.
In the early 1980s, high-rent luxury condos started springing up from the empty lots on the Upper West Side. The neighborhood has become increasingly wealthy and gentrified ever since then. Now, rent and condo prices on the Upper West Side are often even more expensive than the Upper East Side!
Despite this, the Upper East Side is still generally considered the toniest, wealthiest neighborhood in the city. The Upper West Side may be just as expensive -- or sometimes even more expensive -- now, but the Upper East Side has been the traditional home of New York's upper class for many decades now, so the reputation survives. Old-money New Yorkers still tend to think that the Upper East Side is the only neighborhood that is appropriate for people of their standing to live in.
