The northern Mexican state of Chihuahua has five major climates, depending on altitude:

The Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range lies to the west of the state; as such it has a Subtropical Highland (Köppen Cfb) and Humid Subtropical (Köppen Cwa) climate. Within the mountain range there are small regions with microclimates, which include Tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) in deep canyons located in the extreme southern part of the state; Continental Mediterranean climate (Köppen Dsb) is located in the extremely high elevations of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Most of the state's northern latitudes are part of the Chihuahuan desert; as such it has Hot Desert (Köppen BWh) and Cool Desert (Köppen BWk) climates.
