All Jeep CJ's are 5 on 5½".
No a CJ is a 5 on 5.5 and any newer jeep is 5 on 4.5.
ALL wranglers between 1989 and 1996 use the 5 bolt, 4-1/2" bolt pattern. This is the same as most of the older Fords. I am not sure when they changed to this from the earlier models, but the CJ's were 5 on 5" bolt pattern. The new Jeeps are also this bolt pattern. 2007-
87-06 Wranglers all use 5*4.5. (does not include Cj model) 2006+ use 5*5.

The 97 is a TJ, but yes, a 17 inch rim will fit as long as the bolt pattern is 5x4.5
