The ancient Egyptians recognised various types of soul in each person. These are written with the hieroglyphs that spell out:
kA . . . . . . .the bodily essence, or life force
bA . . . . . . .the soul or personality
Ax . . . . . . .the spirit or ghost
rn . . . . . . .the name, the essence of a person's existence
Swyt . . . . .the shadow
These are usually written out as Ka, Ba, Akh, Ren and Sheut today, but we can never know how the ancient Egyptians said these words.
It was believed that a person would continue forever in the afterlife, so long as their name (rn) was remembered. This explains why kings and nobles had their names recorded as many times as possible.
