We call it voodoo here too. It isn't a Hawaiian thing. In Hawaiian language, it would be a special kind of pāhiʻuhiʻu. But it would more than likely just borrow the word and call it wupu or something.
The Finnish word voodoo means voodoo in English.
Voodoo is a very interesting word.
Voodoo does not have a holy book. Rather, it is passed down by word of mouth.

voodoo
The word voodoo refers to a specific type of magic that originated in Africa, as practiced by African shamans (sometimes known as witch doctors). Voodoo is best known for the use of the voodoo doll, which is supposed to be magically connected to a person, so that by harming the doll, you can harm the person. By threat of voodoo dolls, a shaman can keep a superstitious population in a state of fear.

Voodoo is a common Negro religion. It is not bad word yet some people have been led to believe it is. The 007 James Bond movie "Live and let Die" gave voodoo a bad name.
"Hawaii" is possibly based on the native word for homeland (Owhyhee).
