The exact year is not given, but a German soldier implies when he's speaking with Father that the time period is after 1942.
The father, Ralf, is based on Rudolf Höss, the first commandant of Auschwitz. Still, the book is fictional with some historical points.
In the beginning of the novel, a soldier implies it was set during 1942.
On May 1, 1940, Höss became the commandant at Auschwitz.
In June 1941, he started the gassing.
The book says "a year later after moving", therefore, it in 1942, Höss wife found out about the gas chambers. (fact)
It also states months (years?) after the fictional Bruno dies, The Last Chapter states Höss was captured, and then was later hanged. (the book never mentions this)
The beginning of the book is set in Berlin, Germany; and the rest (majority) is Auschwitz.
ALSO, it states Bruno and Shmuel are 9 and their birthday was in 1934, making the year around 1942/1943; depending on if they have had their birthday.
1943 or 1944

Both are tragicBoth are set in WWIIBoth have Jewish protagonists
Well, during World War II, around 1942. It's set in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz.
It's a book and movie about a 9 year old boy (Bruno) who moves to Auschwitz with his family because his Father is the Commandant. At Auschwitz, Bruno meets a Jewish boy named Shmuel who lives in a concentration camp.
The boy who wears the striped pyjamas is named Shmuel (the Hebrew origin of Samuel). He is befriended by the Bruno, the son of the German officer, who near the end of the book also wears a set of the "striped pyjamas" given to him by Shmuel.

"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" was a movie based upone a book. The story takes place in Nazi Germany during WW2 and it focuses on a son of a German soldier who lived near the Auschwitz concentration camp. It has been awhile since I've seen it so I can't pinpoint a specific year of the war but it was between 1940
It set him apart from the rich boy that became his friend. And the rich boy thought they were pajamas, but he didn't realize they were for prisoners.
Auschwitz-Birkenau. Although, never mentioned by name this was the only Nazi death camp with 4 crematoria.
