Astronaut Ed White exited Gemini 4 over the Claifornia coast on June 3, 1965 to become the first American to walk in space. Jim McDivitt stayed inside the capsule and photographed White through his window. The photos McDivitt took became some of the most iconic images in the history of space exploration. White spent 20 minutes outside the vehicle. When he reentered Gemini 4 and closed the hatch, they were just east of the Florida coast.

Gemini 4 was White's only spaceflight. He died in the Apollo 1 fiire on January 27, 1967. McDivitt later commanded the Apollo 9 mission which tested the first Lunar Module in earth orbit.
