The zonules of Zinn are rings of tiny fibrous strands inside the eyeball which connect the lens to a surrounding ring of muscular tissue, called the ciliary body.
At rest, the circumferential muscle fibres in the ciliary are relaxed, and so the radial fibres in the zonules are taut. The lens is a flattened sphere, and in this resting state the zonules pull on its equator to make it more oblate (i.e. they 'flatten' it in a front-to-back direction). This focuses distant objects onto the light sensitive retina at the back of the eye.
