Clean the CPU and the base of the heat sink with isopropyl alcohol before applying the thermal compound.
Thermal decomposition
Solids melt on heating. A2. But if you are thinking of the destruction of the material, perhaps pyrolysis is what you seek.
The cpu can over heat
A material that is a good thermal conductor would hold in a lot of heat. These thermal conductors would also transfer heat easily.
Thermal compound or grease helps disapate the heat from your CPU to where the fan can exhaust it to the outside.

it depends on what the compound is made up of. if it is made out of a solid and liquid then yes and the same goes if it is made up of two liquids, however if it is made up of two gasses or a liquid and a gass then it will just evaporate.
The mass may be modified by oxidation or thermal decomposition.
Thermal compound
Thermal compound rests between the CPU (heatspreader) and the heatsink, and is used to improve heat conductivity in areas where the two metal surfaces aren't completely flush.
It is called Thermal Compound.
