Time dilation is tied into Einstein's theories of Relativity. It is the the difference of elapsed time as measured by two different observers. This means that Time Dilation is basically how two people perceive the passing of time-based on the conditions they are traveling in. These "differences" in time are mosty tied to An increase in gravity and fast travel. For speed, traveling at the speed of light (hypothetical) would cause your time to slow down because you are moving at the same speed as the light around you. This causes the time for you to slow down relative to an observer not traveling at that speed. In theory, if they looked at you in a ship you are traveling in, they would see you moving in slow motion. FAST=SLOW. For gravity, the closer you are to a high source of gravity such as a black hole, the slower your time moves. The reasons for this are hard to explain and are past my abilities to put into words (I'm 17 and never taken a physics class, I just have a passion for this sort of topic). But in general, Time dialation revolves around Einsteins theories of special relativity and is caused by the your interation with light in the case of time dialation during speed, and your interaction with bending of spacetime in the case of time dialation with gravity. Now these "time changes" take extreme velocity and gravity change to cause any real difference so it does not effect everyday life on earth. Sorry in simple terms, time dilation is the changing of the a persons "time" based off the a relative observer. The movie "Interstellar" has great examples of time Dilation. Hope this helps.

What is the difference between twin paradox and gravitational time dilation?

twin paradox appears and is solvable with only special relativity, gravitational time dialation requires general relativity.

Is time dialation exponential or linear?

Time dilation, which can be derived from the Lorentz transformations is t'=t/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2) where t is the time interval in the rest frame, and t' is the interval in the lab frame. This relationship is neither linear or exponential in v.

Is there any relationship between light and time?

In special relativity there is a relationship between light and space and time, or more properly light and spacetime. As the speed of light as defined in Maxwell's equations is determined to be a constant regardless of motion of source or observer, spacetime must warp in a certain way (time dialation & space contraction in the direction of observed motion) to maintain meaningful measurements that agree in a sensible way between reference frames having different motion. Using the right relationship, despite changes in measured rate of time and lengths in space between observers in different frames they can all get the same values for intervals between events. With distances measured in meters and time measured in meters of light travel time, the interval in meters is:I = √( X2 + Y2 + Z2 - T2 )

How are speed and distance directly related?

They are related over the time. Speed x time = distance. They are related over the time. Speed x time = distance. They are related over the time. Speed x time = distance. They are related over the time. Speed x time = distance.

How do you solve for time?

Time equals Distance divided by Time.

Is it possible to travel in time?

as to the original comment to this question, "Yes of corse it is they did it in star trek. live long and prosper", this is not science fiction. we dont want crap answers that deal with TV. the theory of time travel is actual physics. not just something that they do on TV or in movies.plus they never have time dialation when they "go back". technically, if you time travel, the person time taveling will get younger and travel into his or her past, while going into the future.
