1997 Dodge Ram 3500, Reg cab, 8ft bed, 5.9L V8 gas engine,135" Wheel base, Rear wheel drive, Dual rear wheel, Manual transmission w/OD, GVWR is 10,500
Towing Capacity is 5000, pounds. Don't try more than 3000 unless you've got the V6, you won't get very far. Also, the max tongue weight is 600 pounds, so make sure you don't exceed that. Some trailers (especially dual axles) recomend your truck be over 3500 pounds, which the Tacoma is not (2900 gross weight). You'll find out quickly if you're on the freeway towing close to 5k, 4th gear is your best option. Good luck.
Unladen weight mean Kerb Weight
Though both are rated as 1 ton vehicles, the 3500, has dual wheels, which provide a more stable platform for towing. Also, two tires per side put less load on each tire.
3500
Dually in a Chevrolet Dually vehicle refers to the dual rear wheels on the one axle of the truck. They can also have a fifth wheel which is used for towing heavy trailers.
Dual rear wheels are more stable, but, when unladen - and especially on slick roads - have a higher aspect ratio, ergo, less ground pressure, as the weight is distributed over a wider area than a SRW vehicle.
