There were two types of tribune in Rome - a military tribune who was an officer who assisted the consul/proconsul/praetor in command of an army, being given special tasks like command of a legion or other subordinate command, or a staff job; and there were Tribune of the Plebs - 10 political representives who were elected by the plebs to represent them in the Senate, who had veto powers and could introduce legislation. They gained senator status afterwards and so progressively diluted Patrician (nobles) control of the Senate.
