The new format makes the pages load faster and mean the user has to perform less clicks to get to pages and less clicks to contribute. This makes things faster, better, easier and cheaper for those with limited internet packages.
Websites across the internet are becoming more interactive and taking less clicks to access areas, usually because of mobile devices such as iPads and smartphones. Answers is simply "getting with the times".
Maybe it's time you got with the times too? :)

WikiAnswers has done a lot of new maintenance updates to WikiAnswers, thus providing us with a whole new website with different colors, format etc., I don't believe there is an archive of the old WA either.

It is impossible for WikiAnswers to be in an encyclopedic format because WikiAnswers was created on the fact that no one wanted to find out information through encyclopedias, but rather just want a straight, and short, answer to their question. Answers.com is in the encyclopedic formati, while WikiAnswers has the human, short side of the answer.

There is one word for this occurrence: vandals. Vandals do anything to mess up WikiAnswers, as they take advantage of the Wiki format where any one can do anything. A vandal just happened to get to that question, and since there are new ones every day, it is really hard to get rid of all of them.
