there are many forces that can act in an upward direction, but most of them (conceptually) are related to "normal force", the force that prevents gravity from breaking a desk every time a book is set on it.

normal force is the force of resistance to change: it comes down to the attractive force in the molecular bonds of the (ie) desk. because the molecules in the desk require force to break and the force of gravity from the book is not great enough to overcome that, the desk stays intact.
