Sometimes wood needs to be re varnished or restrained. To remove old varnish, you can use either a paint stripper or sand off the old varnish.
It usually means the gasoline is old however, if you have put an injector cleaner or something like that in your gas it may be cleaning older varnish deposits from fuel lines and even the filter. If you haven't added an injector cleaner to your tank you probably should to help dissolve any varnish buildup caused by old gasoline.

Yes, gas does get old and varnish will develop if it sits for too long. But we're talking months and years here, not weeks. You'll be fine if you drive your car often.
The purpose of fuel stabilizer is to keep the gas from going bad. Once it is bad then it is too late. Using old gas will just cause it to varnish inside the combustion chamber and carburetor. Use fresh gas. Good luck.
Use sunflower oil or nail varnish remover. Personally I would recommend nail varnish remover. WARNING! Always take old nail varnish off before putting new on.
Go to Eastwood.com and look up gas tank reliner kits. Don't use cola or any other substance that is not specifically for fuel tanks.
Varnish, or in other words it does not smell like gas, it smells almost burnt
