WITCH HAZEL IS A clear liquid used as a skin astringent, (something used to cleanse the skin and constrict the pores) It is an extract from the leaves and/or bark of the shrub, "hamamelis virginiana", mixed with water and alcohol to make WITCH HAZEL. It is for external use only, and does not require a prescription; it is purchased over the counter in a drug store or where they sell cosmetics.

According to Wikipedia "Witch-hazel is a genus of flowering plants in the family Hamamelidaceae." The extract taken from the bark or leaves is often used for homeopathic medicine, for headaches, fever, migraines, and sinuses. Sometimes this may be in the manner of Witch-hazel tea. The term "Witch's hazel" in the possessive form may come from the fact that witch-doctors and Shamans used this form of medicine; the scientific name of the plant is Hamamelis.

witch hazel is used as an alternative, more mild approach to alcohal. rubbing alcohal burns very badly, where witch hazel doesn.t but as far as antiseptic, and cleansing power, alchohal wins. witch hazel is nice for kids, who hate the burning feeling. but for an astringent or to be used on your face, witch hazel is the best.
