The inscription is formed in the Thuluth Arabic script, and translates basically as "There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is God's messenger". This phrase is known as Shahada, and is an important declaration of belief in the Muslim faith.

The phrase is and was found on many other flags, including the old Afghan flag (used until 2001) and on the flag of the unrecognised state of Somaliland
