Could be any number of things ... a short list:
* low engine oil level * low cooland level * emission problems * spark plug or ignition problems * oxygen sensor defect You can take the car to most any auto parts house and have the "code" read for a small fee. That will tell you exactly what may be causing the problem.
The check engine or service engine soon light comes on to alert you that there is or was a problem with the emissions system on your vehicle. If the light comes on steady and stays on, it means that there is a problem and you should have it checked out soon. If it comes on and flashes, it means you will cause damage if you continue driving.

It means you drive down to you local car parts store and ask to borrow one of their engine light code readers to see what the problem is, the light indicates there is something wrong, that something wrong could be 100 things, you need the reader to find out whats wrong.
When the service engine soon light comes on it means the computer has found a problem, it should post a code in the computer memory. Plug a scanner into the port and it should give you the code. From that you can look up what the code means and that will give you some idea of what the problem may be.
The Check Engine light comes on when the ECU detects something is wrong with the emissions system on the vehicle. You will need to have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. The Maintenance Required light comes on to alert you to the fact that some scheduled maintenance, as outlined in your owners manual, is due. It can be as simple as an oil change or can be something else. Look in your owners manual to find out what service is needed.
If an engine transmission light comes on in the dashboard there can be a potential problem with the drive-train. The engine's computer should receive a diagnostic to determine if there is anything wrong with the transmission.
