What is wrong with my Nissan altima that key won't turn in ignition?

Many cars will not turn on if there is dirt or grime on the key, it is a safety feature of sorts. Another feature is where the steering wheel locks and the car will not start, a person has to pull the steering wheel all the way to the one side and try to start the car.
