The song influenced me in a very powerful way, I was working in upper management for a large firm. My daily commute took two hours daily in one direction. If there was heavy traffic my commute could take as much as three hours. My family was quite young at the time and my attempt to climb the company ladder left me very little time at home during the week. The weekends were all my own to spend all my time with my three young boys and my wife. I so deeply valued that time with my family. One day as I sat in bumper to bumper traffic the cats in the cradle came on, as I listened to the words they spoke to me in a very powerful way. I made the decision to leave my great paying job that very moment, knowing full well that a position like mine didn't come around every day. Without consulting my wife I contacted my manager the moment I arrived at my office and ask him to meet me for lunch where I tended my resignation. I never regretted trading money for family time. Today all of my sons know their father very well, and we speak of the memories often. My sons, today, as adults still hug and kiss me when we gather even in public. They tell me they love me openly even around friends. I am grateful for that song as it helped to remind me of what is truly important in life.
