Once you get your raft, you are best served by going either to Dragon Cove (up and left) or to Parrot Port (across to right). Since you cannot trade much right away, there is more salvage to the left and above Dragon Cove, or between Parrot Port and Golden Harbor. The difference is that there are sea monsters around Dragon Cove, which will eventually attack, and pirates around Parrot Port, who likewise may sink you and cost you doubloons. You have a better chance to escape the monsters, who can provide a real wealth of doubloons once you have a ship that can shoot them (you buy new ships at Dragon Cove).
