In 1697, Dutch sailor Willem de Vlamingh reached "New Holland", as it was then called. When he reached Rottnest Island, he saw the quokkas, small wallaby-like animals, and their grassy nests and tunnels. Believing the unusual creatures to be large rats, he named the island after them and their "nests" - Rottenest - now called Rottnest.
