South Carolina never seceded, or it would not be a state today. However, towards the end of J. Q. Adams' presidency, Congress passed what is known as "Tariff of Abominations". The South hated this, because it caused less profit for them. South Carolina completely disregarded the tariff. South Carolina also said that if force is applied on the state, that they would secede from the union. Hope this helps! Source: History Class + Did a 4 page report on this topic.
Yes. North Carolina wasn't the first state to secede but a few states had already done so and it was a state that promoted slavery and Abraham Lincoln opposed of slavery.

The first state to secede from the Union was South Carolina. That did not immediately cause a war. Congress didn't know if other states would follow. When they did, the new Confederacy felt strong enough to fire on a U.S. Army base on a small island in Charleston Harbour. After that, Lincoln called for volunteer troops. And the war was on.
Yes, but it wasn't one of the first states to do so. That was fortunate, when Sherman arrived there after putting the boot into South Carolina, which was identified as the state that started the war.
He rejected the final compromise because it would have allowed some new slave-states.
