The north considered the main issue in the war to be slavery. The south considered the main issue in the war to be state's rights. So as you see they weren't even fighting over the same issues!
The true issue between the North and the South was that the South wanted to use their states rights as the constitution stated they should be. The government wanted the South to obey the laws that they set forth. The beginning of the Civil War had little to do with the slavery issue. It was the same principle that made us want to be independent of England: We (the south) did not want a government that was very far away dictating to us how we should govern our people and live our lives.
There are many primary sources of conflict that led to the Civil War, one main issue was the issue of slavery. The Union was against the institution of slavery, whereas it was one of the South's major sources of income. If this institution was to be completely abolished as the Union wished, the economy in the South would be devastated. Another source of conflict came from the industries of the North, which competed against those of the South. As tensions grew, the flow of Southern raw materials was threatened, and Southern industrialization posed an economic threat.
Umm to start with the North was mostly abolitionist and non-secessionist South was opposite North was.... north South was South also, the Northwon the war...
The main issue that divided the North and the South before the onset of the US Civil War centered around slavery. Most Northerners were content to let slavery in the South continue, but were opposed to the expansion of slavery in the territories. The session of the Southern states ended that particular point of friction.
