First, if you are interviewed you will look ignorant and possibly pathetic if you have no knowledge whatever about what the company is, what its products/services are, where products and/or services are marketed, and so forth. You also want to know what is publicly known about the company's structure to the extent possible. Also, you may have some reasons that you do not want to apply to the company after you do your research. Perhaps you did not know the whole range of products and services provided, and you have some personal, religious or ideological reasons why you do not want to take part.
Researching the company will also give you a good idea about how and where in the company you might fit in. Having a handle on these things is always a good sign to interviewers, even if you have not necessarily isolated the very best fit. Just demonstrating that you gave it serious thought is what will make you a more attractive candidate.
