He held a lot of minor ministerial positions, like minister of forestry and governor of Prussia. His most important functions were that he was the commander of the Geheimestaatspolizei("secret state police") or Gestapo for short. He was also the commander in chief of the German Air Force.
Although he wasn't formally made so, he was usually considered the second-in-command for most of Hitler's reign over Germany. At the very end of the war, Goering was accused of treason, fired and was ordered to be arrested/executed by Hitler; however, Hitler committed suicide and World War II ended before the sentence could be carried out. Goering was captured by the Allies, and committed suicide after he was found guilty at the Nuremberg war crimes trials.
