When he arrived there, he had no more than the clothes on his back, literally, and he was taken in by Miep Gies and her husband Jan. He lived with them for seven years, continuing to run his business, Opekta. After the publication of his daughter's diary, he spent the rest of his life spreading Anne's message through the diary,and answering correspondence about it from all over the world.
