Morris Frank's first guide dog was a German Shepherd originally named "Kiss" and later renamed "Buddy." Buddy was trained by Dorothy Harrison Eustis in Switzerland. In 1928, Frank returned to the U.S. with Buddy and began campaigning for the opening of a school to train guide dogs for the blind. In 1929 the Seeing Eye was founded. They used German Shepherds exclusively in the early years, but now use German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Lab/Golden crosses.
