There are several different careers that are available in the field of veterinary medicine. For example, most vets work in a private practice, but they could also take government jobs, or teach other upcoming veterinarians.

Jobs Similar to VeterinarianIt depends, which side of the veterinarian part do you like and which part do you not like? If you like the administrative part of taking notes and listening to people and helping people understand what is wrong with their pet and education... you could work at a zoo as an animal trainer, or as a secretary at a vet's office. If you like the science side of being a vet, I would suggest working as a veterinary technician. Someone who take blood samples, runs lab work and gives a helping hand during surgery. As a vet tech, you wouldn't necessarily have to work in a clinic either. You could work for a Humane Society or a local ASPCA. There are many different jobs that you can do that relate to helping animals that don't take 8 years of college!

Hope this helps!

Although most veterinarians go into private practice upon graduation, there are many other career opportunities for trained veterinarians. In the United States, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is the largest employer of veterinarians; their job is to inspect live animals and dressed animal carcasses to ensure the meat from those animals is safe for humans to eat. Other veterinarians work in the military, providing both clinical care to service animals and the pets of military personnel as well as verifying food safety and performing various outreach projects. Veterinarians in academia are responsible for teaching the next generation of veterinarians, and there are numerous veterinarians working in research facilities on everything from vaccines to medical devices for implantation. Outside of the medical world, there are veterinarians doing everything from running businesses to working as federal legislators.
