His first employment was as a teacher and tutor at secondary schools in Germany. he also was a technical assistant at the Swiss Patent Office. After four years in this post he became a professor in Zurich and then in Munich. In 1933 he renounced his German citizenship, moved to the US and became a Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton University.
