The fruitcake wrapped in tinfoil went mouldy because, despite its dense and preservative-rich ingredients, it was not stored in a properly airtight container. Tinfoil can trap moisture, creating a humid environment that encourages mold growth. Additionally, if the cake was not completely cool or had any moisture on its surface when wrapped, this would further contribute to the development of mold. Proper storage in a sealed container would have helped prevent this issue.
