checks and balances
It keeps any branch form becoming too powerful. Each branch of government limits the power of the other branches.
The fact that it is divided into three branches that have to have approval from each other to do anything. It is called checks and balances.

so if two of the other government branches thought the other was too powerful they could check the issue then balance the branches
create three branches and make sure the branches do their jobs and can count on each other so they don't become more powerful then another!
