The Soviet system was unable to maintain productive industries, and as a consequence many industrial activities were shut down and their workers unable to find employment. Popular sentiment against the government was based on the lack of consumer goods, and the inefficient state of public services. This, and the growth of nationalist movements within the Soviet bloc, led to the dismantling of the Russian-dominated political confederation.
